But for us at MLGM, it’s Gas Safety Week every single week of the year.
Gas Safety Week is a national safety campaign that aims to bring everyone in the country together for one common goal – to keep the nation gas safe.
In a broader sense it’s designed to raise general awareness of gas safety and the importance of taking care of your gas appliances. It’s coordinated by the Gas Safe Register, the official list of gas engineers who are legally allowed to work on gas.
We’ve got you covered.
At MLGM we’re absolute sticklers when it comes to gas safety. With us it isn’t just an afterthought, it’s central to every aspect of the way we work.
One reason why we’re getting behind the campaign is that gas safety can’t be overemphasised. It’s a fact that badly fitted and poorly serviced gas appliances can cause gas leaks, fires, explosions, and carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning.
CO is a highly poisonous gas that can kill quickly and without warning. You can’t see it, taste it or smell it. Carbon Monoxide poisoning affects over a thousand people each year. That’s why it’s essential to take care of your gas appliances properly and to keep an eye out for warning signs that they might be unsafe.
Have your gas appliances serviced every year by a registered expert.
Only use a Gas Safe registered engineer to fit, fix and service your appliances. Check that your engineer carries a Gas Safe ID card. Read the information on the back of the card to make sure they are qualified for the work you need doing.

Check your gas appliances for warning signs that they are not working properly.
Signs may include lazy yellow/orange flames instead of crisp blue ones, black marks on or around the appliance, a pilot light that keeps going out or too much condensation in the room. If you rent your home ask for a copy of the landlord’s current Gas Safety Record.
Know the six signs of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning.
Headaches, dizziness, breathlessness, nausea, collapse and loss of consciousness. Besides putting you at risk of CO poisoning, unsafe gas appliances can cause gas leaks, fires and explosions.
Fit an audible carbon monoxide alarm.
This will alert you if there is carbon monoxide in your home. It’s a great idea to make sure your friends and relatives have one too. Check the alarm is marked EN50291 and displays the British Standards’ Kitemark.
Keep vents and chimneys clear.
Make sure you don’t block any vents during cold spells as they are vital to ensure gas appliances burn properly, and chimneys need to be cleaned and checked regularly.
Never attempt DIY on a gas appliance.
If you suspect there might be something wrong with your appliance or that it’s not working properly, call your Gas Safe registered engineer. And only use gas appliances for their intended purpose. (Don't be tempted to use them for something they weren't meant for, such as using a gas cooker to heat a room.)
Help others stay gas safe.
If you have a friend, relative or neighbour who is unable to arrange their own gas safety check or are unaware of what they need to do to keep safe, ensure they have their appliances checked and serviced regularly.
